Unlocking the Secrets of Cholesterol: The Advanced Lipid Panel Test

If you struggle with high cholesterol and related conditions, an advanced lipid profile can be a helpful tool for your cardiologist.

What is Advanced Lipid Panel testing?

When detecting and managing high cholesterol, your provider must have the most comprehensive data available – that’s where the Advanced Lipid Panel comes in. Your provider usually starts with a standard cholesterol test, a “lipid panel.” This standard test measures total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglycerides. Advanced Lipid panels often include apolipoprotein B (apoB) and LDL particle number (LDL-P), offering your cardiologist insight into additional risk factors you may have for coronary artery disease or other heart diseases. 1

Other tests on an advanced lipid panel may include any of the following:

  • Apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1)
  • HDL particle number (HDL-P)
  • Small dense LDL (sdLDL)
  • HDL-2
  • Lipoprotein (a) Mass (Lp (a))
  • Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase (Lp-PLA2)
  • Apolipoprotein E (Apo E) Genotype
  • Omega 3 fatty acid
  • Omega 6 fatty acid

Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) and LDL particle number (LDL-P)

Cholesterol has to attach to a lipoprotein to be transported in the blood. HDL particles are called Apo A, while Apo B is the particle responsible for atherosclerosis, or fatty plaque buildup in the arteries. When triglycerides and cholesterol levels surge in the bloodstream, they increase the concentration of Apo B, accumulating in arterial walls. In response, macrophages, a type of white blood cell, migrate to these areas and consume the deposited Apo B, marking the onset of atherosclerosis. 2

Why do I need an Advanced Lipid Panel Test?

Recent data show that there can still be significant cardiovascular risk despite the management of traditional risk factors such as systemic hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. Advanced Lipid Panel testing offers your provider a more in-depth look, especially for patients with other health conditions such as diabetes or insulin resistance or whose cardiovascular disease continues progressing even when their LDL and total cholesterol are within their target parameters. This test helps your cardiologist more accurately determine your best target number based on your risk factors.

How is an Advanced Lipid test performed?

Advanced lipid testing is performed using a simple blood test in the office, and the test does not require fasting. Insurance coverage should be discussed with your provider and your insurance company before your appointment.

When do I need an Advanced Lipid Panel?

Typically, Advanced Lipid testing will be done at your initial consultation and intermittently throughout treatment. Depending on your risk factors and overall health, some providers recommend advanced lipid testing after treatment when you have reached your target goals for your LDL cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol. 1
