Types of Gastrointestinal Disorders

There are two types of gastrointestinal disorders depending on their target organ.

Structural Gastrointestinal Disorder

Structural gastrointestinal diseases involve abnormalities of the digestive tract and their physical manifestations. They cause structural changes to the organs, leading to certain symptoms in different parts.

Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders

Functional gastrointestinal diseases cause damage to organs that control food absorption and separate liquid from waste within the body (digestion). In most cases, they can be treated through home remedies and medications. It is important to note that some functional gastrointestinal diseases, like celiac disease, are not classified as diseases but are seen as a condition since they have no apparent cause.

Signs and Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Diseases

Sometimes, gastrointestinal disorders can have symptoms that are different from those of the disease itself. These signs and symptoms are referred to as non-specific. They can differ from person to person, depending on the location of the abnormality from your stomach to your intestines and rectum. Some signs and symptoms may co-occur as the disease is displayed by your body, leading to misdiagnosis.

Bloating & Excess Gas

Bloating and excess gas are common symptoms of digestive system disorders such as gastritis, peptic ulcer, and constipation. Bloating occurs when fluid retention in the abdomen occurs because of gases released by undigested food or gas produced within the intestines. Food may seem harder to digest, which leads to gas formation.

Nausea & Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are present in various diseases, from food poisoning to gastritis and ulcer, gallbladder disease, Crohn’s disease, and irritable bowel syndrome. If a person doesn’t seek medical attention for their nausea and vomiting, they will continue to experience these problems, leading to malnutrition.

Diarrhea & Constipation

Diarrhea and constipation are two of the most common gastrointestinal disorders. Although they are often found together, their causes may vary. Diarrhea is a condition where the stool is watery and loose. It can be due to overconsumption of certain medications or foods, lactose intolerance, infections, inflammatory bowel disease, parasite infections, or irritable bowel syndrome. Constipation is formed when the person experiences several bowel movements that are hard and difficult to pass.

Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain can be accompanied by fever, cramping, or bloating. A disruption within the body often causes abdominal pain because of an internal organ failure or obstruction. There are many causes of abdominal pain, and its symptoms come from diseases such as gastritis, Peptic Ulcer, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome, among others.

Diagnosing the Disorder

ultrasounds

Ultrasound is the most commonly used method of diagnosing gastrointestinal disorders. It helps physicians determine the location and nature of an internal problem.

X-rays

X-rays are another method used in diagnosing gastrointestinal disorders. It is a noninvasive test that uses ionizing radiation. Radiation is used to visualize organs and tissues in the body without penetrating the skin. X-rays can be an effective method of diagnosing disorders.

Endoscopy

Endoscopy is one of the most common laboratory tests for diagnosing gastrointestinal disorders. It uses a flexible, lighted tube called an endoscope to view internal organs by entering through the mouth or anus. The doctor uses this tool to examine the internal structures of your organs and collect samples for further analysis.

Treatments

Drinking Plenty of Fluids

Drinking plenty of liquids is one way to help your body eliminate toxins. Drinking enough water will prevent dehydration and have a healthy body.

Medication

Gastrointestinal disorders can be treated with medication. If your stomach does not produce enough digestive enzymes, you will need different medications for proper digestion. They are prescribed by your doctor and are available over the counter at pharmacies.

Diet Changes & Supplementation

Changing your diet can help with digestion and in relieving specific symptoms. If you are experiencing nausea and vomiting, avoiding spicy, fried, and fatty foods is helpful. Also, you should choose low-fat dairy products and whole grains to improve your digestion. Some supplements are effective in decreasing the symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders. A good example is vitamin B12 which is required to produce red blood cells in the body.

Nowadays, the gastrointestinal disorder can be overcome. You can recover and overcome the disorder if you get the right treatment option. Health is an important aspect that every individual takes into consideration. Because without it, it’s challenging to enjoy your life.
